Gen. Ambrose Burnside's Carbine
This firearm is on exhibit at the NRA National Sporting Arms Museum in Springfield, MO.
The third most popular cavalry carbine of the war, the Burnside was made between 1857 and 1865.
U.S./Burnside 1862 Lever Action Carbine (single-shot/
breech-loading/ black powder/ cartridge ammunition)
Small breech-loading carbines such as this one did play a part at
Antietam, especially at close range. But carnage was created by the
rifle-musket at every range on this, the bloodiest day of the
war.
